Greyhounds are the fastest dogs on the planet now and that have ever lived. Dogs have an average top speed of 19 miles per hour (30.5 km per hour) but Greyhounds have been recorded to reach a top speeds of about 45 miles per hour (72.5 km per hour). Greyhounds are also the oldest known breed of dog and bones of Greyhound type dogs have been found that date back as far as 9000 BC. They were used as a hunting dog and their name is a mistranslation of the German name Greishund (old or ancient dog) and not the colour grey.
