When did the first dog species appear?
About 40 million years ago the Miacis appeared and is the ancestor of all dogs. It is a weasel-like animal that lived in both trees and dens. The Tomarctus then evolved from the Miacis and became the direct ancestor of the genus Canis. This is the genus that includes the wolf and jackal. All breeds of dog have been developed by people from the wolf, from the Cavoodle to the huge Mastiffs. It’s believed that the evolution from wolf to domestic dog that we see today began about 12,000 years ago but some estimates would put the date back much further.
